The most common sifting method is a Police Situational Judgement Test or in short a Police SJT.
What is a Police Situational Judgement Test?
A police situational judgment test is a test of your behaviour, response, and skills when you come up against situations that are an everyday occurrence when working as a police officer. Police situational judgment tests are used for many different types of jobs, and are especially important for the police as the ability to respond quickly and calmly with a clear head is a must for this role. Unlike other situational judgment tests, most of the police situational judgment tests (SJT’s) are timed, meaning you need to be able to think quickly.
For the police, the test examines the specific competencies that they have singled out as necessary for the job and to see how well you fit the job criteria. It looks at how you handle situations with authority figures and disagreements with colleagues along with how you interact with citizens in need and giving instructions.
Special Constable Situational Judgment Test
The SJT for special constables is a 65 minute assessment with 50 questions. Each question presents you with a police-related situation and four possible actions. Your task is to choose the best and worst option.
